Who Are We?
The Naturally Boulder Task Force began like a lot of things in Boulder, with a group of folks getting together to brainstorm an idea. The original idea was around building a commercial kitchen that could be shared by local entrepreneurs and businesses. It would provide an incubation program for natural and organic food producers in Boulder, Colorado.
The original core group included a spectrum of community stakeholders - the city, a variety of service providers, the financial and real estate community, the university - and of course, a handful of entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs. It was evident early on that the ideas being generated were a natural fit with Boulder's newly constituted Economic Vitality Advisory Board, so an invitation was extended to the EVAB to join with the Naturally Boulder Task Force and develop a broader vision and plan to support the economic growth of the natural products industry in Boulder. And so we began.
Today we are an officially constituted task force of the Economic Vitality Advisory Board (EVAB). The EVAB was created by the City of Boulder in 2004. It is a panel of about fifty community representatives drawn from the city's businesses, community organizations, schools and research institutions. The EVAB is a "think tank" offering insight and advice to the city on economic vitality programs and policies. More information about the EVAB is available on the City of Boulder website at www.ci.boulder.co.us. Our VISION: To create a thriving natural products business community able to support business interests along the product chain. Our MISSION: To solidify Boulder as the epicenter of the natural products industry and support nascent natural businesses to launch and stay in Boulder, Colorado. And, to promote natural products created in Boulder through various activities. Our achievements to date include the creation of a virtual support center, this website, Naturally Boulder Day, networking activities, and a newsletter. Future plans include a retail store and tasting room, and retail promotions. We are already working in partnership with the Boulder Innovation Center on its natural products track as part if its incubation program and we continue to hold the possibility of a facility that would include commercial kitchen space as a long-term objective. Most importantly we want to support the voice of the 900+ natural product companies and individuals that are now on our mailing list and are such a vital part of the Boulder community. For more information, please contact us. "From my perspective, the Naturally Boulder effort, while an outgrowth of the Economic Vitality process, is true to what is unique about Boulder...great passion, energy and an entrepreneurial approach that is not waiting for a lead. For decades Boulder has quietly led the nation and perhaps boldly, the world in its commitment to healthy lifestyles and sustainable businesses. Our natural products companies, while keenly aware and leaders in environmental stewardship, are also the competitive players in the marketplace today and will be as well in the future. We are proud that our natural products industry is helping to shape and define the Boulder economy as well the national and world economy by filling a gap that has been left by a changing manufacturing sector. Naturally Boulder has quickly become a standard for an economic development program that is assured of success because the industry's leaders and the industry's newest players are involved and energized." --Frank Bruno, City Manager, City of Boulder, Colorado |
